WHAT IS SELF ESTEEM?

Self esteem is all about how much you like and value yourself.
Do you believe you are a good person?
Do you see the good in the things that you do? Or do you constantly beat yourself up about not being good enough?
When you do a good job, do you see what you missed out/could have improved rather than how great a job you did?

A person with healthy self esteem strikes a good balance between seeing the good in themselves, without having too much of it, which  can be seen as arrogance.

WHY DO WE NEED POSITIVE SELF ESTEEM?

Because self esteem can drive us forward, or hold us back. Those with good self esteem believe that they can do something, whilst those without spend more time worrying about not being able/good enough to do it.

HOW DO I WORK OUT WHICH ONE I HAVE?

You will most likely already know whether or not you have healthy self esteem. But these are just a few indicators to help you:

HEALTHY SELF ESTEEM
You can see your good points, as well as your bad points.
You believe in yourself and your abilities
You trust yourself
You can say No to something or someone you don't agree with
Failing at something does not stop you trying again
You believe you deserve to have good things/experiences

LOW SELF ESTEEM
You only see the bad in you and fail to see the good
You doubt yourself and your abilities
You do not believe in yourself and believe everyone else is better than you
You struggle to say NO to something which you don't want to do
When you fail at something, you tell yourself "See I knew I wasn't good enough"
You don't feel you deserve anything

HOW CAN YOU CREATE HEALTHY SELF ESTEEM?

Don't be too hard on yourself. If you fail at something - look to see what you could learn from it and make a mental note to learn from the lesson. We all fail at times, so don't beat yourself up if you do
REFUSE  to give your inner critic a voice
Don't compare yourself to other people
Wear clothes that make you feel nice
Spend time with people who you enjoy being around
Avoid negative people
Set yourself a realistic challenge
Learn to say NO to people
Learn to be assertive
Write down one positive thing about you/what you have achieved each day
Speak to yourself the way you would speak to others
Learn to accept compliments, by saying "Thank you" instead of "That's not true"
